HTML to Text Converter

Turn HTML into clean, readable plain text — paragraphs, line breaks, bullets and numbered lists are kept, and links can be written out as URLs.

HTML input
Plain text

In shortPaste HTML and get plain text instantly: tags, scripts and styles are removed, while paragraphs, line breaks, bulleted and numbered lists and table rows are kept so the text stays readable.

How to use the HTML to text

  1. Paste HTML. Paste the HTML or open an .html file.
  2. Choose options. Show link URLs, include image alt text and keep blank lines between paragraphs.
  3. Copy the text. The plain text updates live — copy it or download a .txt file.

Better than "remove all tags"

Stripping tags with a regular expression glues words together (<p>One</p><p>Two</p> becomes "OneTwo") and leaves entities like &amp; behind. This converter reads the HTML the way a browser does, then writes text the way a person would: a new line for each block, blank lines between paragraphs, "•" for bullets, "1." for numbered lists, tabs between table cells, and real characters instead of entities.

Common uses

  • The plain-text part of an HTML email (spam filters like having one)
  • Word counts and readability checks on a web page
  • Feeding page content to a search index, spreadsheet or AI prompt
  • Copying an article without its formatting

Need to keep headings and links as structure? Convert to Markdown instead. To keep some tags but remove the junk, use the HTML cleaner.

Private by design: this tool runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you paste or open is uploaded to a server.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert HTML to plain text?

Paste the HTML on this page and the plain text appears next to it. Copy it or download a .txt file.

Does it keep line breaks?

Yes. Paragraphs, headings, list items, table rows and <br> tags all become line breaks.

What happens to links?

With "Show link URLs" on, a link like <a href="https://x.com">X</a> becomes "X (https://x.com)". Turn it off to keep only the link text.

Are scripts and CSS removed?

Yes — the contents of <script>, <style> and <head> are dropped.

Is it private?

Yes, it runs in your browser and uploads nothing.
